We are excited to introduce #17daysofaction, that will run from which will run from 1st - 17th December, with a series of events throughout this time to mark December 17th. We are keen to raise funds to support our service in providing support for sex workers who have experienced or are experiencing violence or abuse, as well as raising awareness in the community to prevent further violence.

For those of you who don't know, December 17th is the International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers. Sadly, since 1990, 180 sex workers have been murdered since 1990; 29 sex workers were murdered in the last 10 years.
We are extending our #17daysofaction to all to come and get involved in any of the events (See our website for more information: http://basisyorkshire.org.uk/about-us/17daysofaction-end-violence-sexworkers/). Please also join us on twitter or other social media sites with our hastag #17daysofaction to show support, helping to facilitate conversations about this.

Basis provides a specialist IDVA/ISVA (Independent Domestic Violence / Sexual Violence Advisor) service for sex workers. If you are experiencing domestic violence/abuse or have in the past, if you have been raped, sexually assaulted or  experienced any form of sexual violence we can support you. Please feel free to get in touch with Taylor, who is our IDVA/ISVA worker, via text, WhatsApp or phone call on 07495516926. For further information please see: http://basisyorkshire.org.uk/sex-work-project/isva-services/

We'd love to hear from you if you'd like to get involved in any way!

The Basis Team! X

Background to the International Day to End Violence against Sex Workers (Dec. 17)

The International Day to End Violence against Sex Workers was created to call attention to hate crimes committed against sex workers and to remember those who have been murdered. It was originally created by The sex workers outreach project in the US  as a memorial and vigil for the victims of the ?Green River Killer? in USA, convicted of the murders of 49 women and believed to have killed at least  71. 17th December has grown to be a global event, where sex workers, sex work support projects and their supporters come together in towns and cities around the world to remember victims of violence and reinforce the message that crimes against sex workers will not be tolerated and perpetrators will be brought to justice.  Please see http://www.december17.org/ if you would like to read more about the day

Title: Re: Basis Sex Work Project- sex workers & the law new updated booklet
Post by: Basis Sex Work Project on 07 March 2017, 04:02:13 pm
Hi Folks,

It was International Sex Worker Rights Day on Friday March. The day?s history goes back to 2001, when over 25,000 sex workers gathered in India for a festival despite efforts from prohibitionist groups who tried to prevent it taking place by pressuring the government to revoke their permit.  The event was organised by Durbar Mahila Samanwaya Committee, a Calcutta based group that has over 50,000 sex worker members, and members of their communities.  Sex worker groups across the world have subsequently celebrated 3rd March as an annual, international event, as International Sex Workers? Rights Day.

So we thought it's a good time to flag up an updated info resource 'Sex Workers & the Law' , it's produced by Release, some of you may have seen it over the years. Well the new updated booklet and rights cards are now out.  You can download a pdf of it on the Release website  www.release.org.uk/publications/sex-workers-and-law-booklet   Over the last decade sex workers in the indoor and online sectors have found it really useful.

If you ever want to talk through any legal stuff associated with sex work do get in touch and of course for anything else be it free condoms, lube, sponges, screening options including screening with the outreach nurse who now comes out and about on outreach with us to visit people at their working flat/home whatever feels safe for them.
Call text or whatsapp Emily on 07710304306 email emily.turner@basis.org.uk  we're on live chat on Tuesday afternoons is you prefer to chat via that - get on that go to our website and click on the 'Chat with us box'  in the bottom left hand corner  on our website  www.basisyorkshire.org.uk/sex-work-project/

Hi Folks,

We thought some people might be interested in the 'Our Voices' booklet which has been coordinated  by Basis Yorkshire. It contains a variety of diverse stories and other perspectives from sex workers in Leeds. It aims to illustrate the diverse experiences of sex workers in Leeds, featuring people from a range of sectors including escorting. It aims to challenge the stigma and stereotypes about sex work.
We?ve got poetry, 10 personal stories and artwork; all the way through the book as well, we?ve created our take on the iconic ?tart cards?.
Throughout the book people share varying aspects of their lives, offer opinions and divulge funny moments.  People also share  thoughts on the law, stigma and sexual health, along with messages for the public, practitioners and other sex workers.  It also  adds to the many other voices calling for the decriminalisation of sex work in the UK!  Collectively, these perspectives are a testament to the diversity of the sex industry, yet of course, they are by no means representative of all women?s experiences, nor do they account for the men and transgender men and women who work in the sex  industry.

The Our Voices book and A4 posters of selected tart cards are available to buy on Etsy  www.etsy.com/uk/listing/511701652/our-voices-perspectives-that-challenge  Please feel free to share any thoughts or any photos of the book on social media, using the hashtag #OurVoicesBook.

Hi Folks

Wanted you to know Basis with the Sex Work Research Hub are hosting a screening of the film Scarlet Road - followed by and Q&A with Rachel Wotton  Thursday, 13 July 2017 from 14:30 to 16:30 in Leeds. The documentary Scarlet Road is a documentary about the extraordinary work of the Australian sex worker Rachel Wotton. Impassioned about freedom of sexual expression,  Rachel has become highly specialized in working with clients with disability. Rachel?s philosophy, that human touch and sexual intimacy can be some of the most therapeutic aspects to our existence, is making a dramatic impact on the lives of her clients. While Rachel?s clients give a glimpse into her clients? sexual self-discovery, Scarlet Road follows Rachel as she strives to increase awareness and access to sexual expression for people with disability.

Rachel is also an active campaigner for both policy makers and the general public to recognise that sex work is work. She has been a part of an international movement to try to gain rights for sex workers and to end the social stigma and discriminatory practices that surround their occupation. She has worked with SWOP NSW and Scarlet Alliance - the Australian Sex Worker Association including developing innovative peer lead initiatives.  To bring greater understanding of her work she has helped set up ?Touching Base? and has travelled overseas to present at conferences. Rachel is currently in Europe as part of  her Winston Churchill Trust ? Travel Fellowship. would like to attend

If you would like to attend text or whatsapp me 07710304306 or email me at Emily.turner@basisyorkshire.org.uk

Title: Re: Leeds - Basis Sex Work Project- sexual health spring updates
Post by: Basis Sex Work Project on 10 April 2018, 02:46:56 pm
Remember here at Basis we can offer regular free and confidential sexual health screening. Screening now is quick simple with results back within two weeks, often before. If there is a positive result this can often be treated quickly within days.

We have access to appointments with a contraception nurse supplying free contraception including implant fitting as well as supplying free condoms and you can always buy more than we give at a reduced cost.

Our new smear testing service is now up and running so why not book an appointment or come to Basis for a no obligation chat. This is an important part of screening that is often overlooked and gives peace of mind.

The nurse will be here on Wednesday 18th April,Wednesday 9th May and 30th May from 1pm until 4pm for smear testing so why not give me a call to book you in .
We are always here to answer any questions so please get in touch.
My number is 07710304306 or you can email me at Gillian.Collingwood@basisyorkshire.org.uk

Hope you all have a good spring and looking forward to some sunny days.

Title: New!! Sex Worker evening meet up, at Basis Office, Leeds.
Post by: Basis Sex Work Project on 22 October 2018, 10:49:59 am
Following some feedback, we have decided to open up Basis exclusively to indoor based sex workers, cam girls, independent escorts, agency girls, and women working in the adult film industry on an evening, the first Thursday of the month. This will be a sex worker led group, intending to be a safe space where conversations can be had, questions asked, peer links and friendships made, and peer support offered. I am always asked questions such as:
•   What’s the best agency to work for?
•   How do I start up as an independent escort?
•   How do I use online forums and advertising sites?
•   How do I do my accounting and finance?
•   Anyone know of good hotels to use? Where can I rent a room?
•   Anyone know anyone who wants to buddy up and work together?
Who better to answer these than yourselves? A sex worker led group would also be an opportunity to share your best safety and privacy tips , support each other, swap stories in a safe non judgement space, and meet like-minded folk.
If you are a new worker, or you’ve been doing it a while and feel you can help others, please consider coming. This is a sex worker led group. I intend to open up and provide cake only, Your space, your group! Please share.

1st Thursday of the month (First one on 1st Nov 2018)
