Pill question
« on: 18 August 2014, 09:20:04 pm »
So basically I can't afford to not work right now but will not do the sponge thing. My period is due a week today and I always last a whole 6 days days :( That's pretty much a full week out of work.
I'm on Marvelon where you take a week off after every 3 weeks I think it is. Rather than have a week off, if I continue the pill will it cancel out my period?  If so that's great but will it knock them out of sync if you get what I mean? Don't want them out of sync but the thought of 6 days off when I'm so skint is killing me!

I was on dianette, 3 weeks on and then one week off. So yes, if I didn't stop and just started a new strip straight away I'd have no period.
I had a thread on it a few weeks ago, got a lot of advice about the pill etc, it's was "help! period " or something, just check the search box. Because this is how I actually stopped dianette and started cerazette.

It's a combined pill, so yes, if you keep taking it, you won't have a 'withdrawal bleed'. Whenever you stop, you should find that you get one within a few days.

The main reason you have one is that the mostly male team that invented hormonal contraception thought that women would be worried if they didn't...

I was thinking the same, but I assume I will need the doctor's note? And will it have side effects? Thanks Xx

'What note?' and no.

Ha lol

You can take the pill up to 90days straight. Doctors won't prescribe more anyways.

Thanks for the replies everyone :) I don't mind having periods cause I see it as an excuse to have a little break and some me time where I can veg out on the sofa and look rough lol but at the moment a whole 6 days off just isn't convenient so I'll just continue taking my next strip of pills when I'm done with this one :) so scared I'll come on my period mid booking but I know it's mega unlikely going by what I've read lol.

I'm currently on Celeste (long story which is for another thread), and because my periods are so heavy, painful and irregular this has been the only contraception so far that has regulated them and brought them down from 10 days to 6, but hasn't lessened the amount,.  If I take them continually rather than the 3 weeks on 1 week off rule I still have a bleed.  Annoyingly the dr's have informed me they aren't willing to give me a hystorectomy.  It's so frustrating.  I suppose I'll just have to wait for my menopause :(

I'm on Yasmin (newer version of dianette) and just keep taking it, I just had breakthrough bleeding last week with having taken it for 4/5 months straight so had to have a break as the breakthrough bleeding can drag on for me

You can take it as long as you want, you don't need to get it just from the doctors either, any sexual health clinics will also prescribe.
It all depends on whose giving prescription I guess, I always get some whenever I get anything else so I've prob got enough scattered around to last me a year or more

Is that because they assume you'll want children? That's bad, you should be given credit that you know your own mind and don't need someone else to make decisions for you about your body

You can also go to your doctor and say you want the pill that doesn't take a week off for your period. For a long time, women skipped the placebos without telling their doctors. Eventually, studies were done to satisfy them that nothing bad would happen if we never menstruate. So, they now make the pill in packs of 30, with no placebos.

Doing this will save time in terms of getting refills, as you're not short by seven pills every month.

Is it possible you suffer from adenomyosis? Not that easy to diagnose - it needs a hospital with pretty good scanning equipment. If adenomyosis is found, you're likely to be offered a hysterectomy, since it's the only cure. I guess you're taking iron to compensate for the blood loss? I found it really helps with the exhaustion that comes with heavy periods.

I would have thought they'd be more inclined to give women of my age (42) a hystorectmy, but for some reason they won't.  As for the adenomyosis, nothing has ever been mentioned or diagnosed.  I've had scans and cameras up there over the last 3 years, and the only things they've found are fibroids (which I've now had removed), and cysts, which they kept a check on last year to see if they would develop into anything else.  Celeste has been the only contraceptive that I've used (and I've tried pretty much all of them now, apart from Yasmin and dianette), that hasn't caused lots of side effects or had me on a period for months at a time.  It would be nice to find a pill that I could take were I didn't bleed, but to go through the whole process of finding one again fills me with dread after everything I've been through with them.

Love spinich and cabbage, so I recon I'm covered on the iron front LMG  ;)
