Accountants are professionals just like us and the service they provide is fairly straightforward, so I don't see why our work should be a problem. If they do mind it they shouldn't let you know that. I just looked up local ones and went with the first that answered, but if you want reassurance that you're talking to someone who's ok with your job you could look through the seeking/offering section here.
I get all my figures together (income, expenses split into categories, interest from bank accounts) and take them to my accountant, then he plugs them in to the form and charges me ?200. I suppose I could get cheaper if I shopped around and of course it can cost more if you need more done. My mum can't deal with paperwork so she just gives it all to her accountant to sort out. I don't know how much that costs.
You can do everything by phone and email, but if you want help with keeping your accounts it might be useful to be able to meet up at least initially so you can look through things together.
Bear in mind when you're looking that not all accountants are chartered. I don't know fully what difference it makes, but if you want to get a mortgage you should have a chartered one because the banks take them seriously.
