I'm clueless with HMRC, I do wrestling sessions so maybe that's why they accepted gym kit? As I said I get the accountant to do everything!

HMRC haven't accepted anything because unless you've been investigated they don't know what you're claiming for; all they have seen is your end of year figure. It's your accountant who has seen your receipts and expense details and put together that figure - HMRC will only see it it if they decide to query it and that's when they'll look at the detailed records :).

In the OPs case, if that annual expense figure is suddenly and inexplicably ?11K higher (unlike gym fees which are going to be lower and fairly constant over the years) I think it's fair to say that could send a red flag up.

Thank The Lord for accountants then!

My accountant/advisor always told me to keep expenses at a reasonable level, an extra couple of hundred up on the last submission of figures is not going to cause flag waving but a few thousand is much more likely to shout at the HMRC automated system!

I have also had expensive dentist work done but not in the implant league, the cost of those is scary! It never occurred to me to claim for it.

If you look at that gov.uk site, gym fees are specifically mentioned as something that's not an acceptable expense, so I hope the accountant is contractually bound to pay for any discovered problems in your return themselves...
'The Ian formerly known as SW5'. What they said: "Indispensable", "You are our best resource", and (hours later!) "I'm afraid that you're being made redundant..."

I'll take my chances, I do worry sometimes that I push it with expenses though but they get a shit load of tax from me so I'll argue my corner if need be, fight the power!

I would have thought that implants were more likely to be acceptable compared to gym membership.  I haven't tried to claim either although I use the gym and have implants. I'm sure I saw cosmetic surgery as an allowable expense on my accountants website, if the surgery was specifically done to improve business.

Hi

My accountant told me I couldn't claim for my boobs.
If you have an accountant he should be able to advise you.
It may depend on what occupation you have on your file.
If not & your doing your own, I wouldn't advise putting them down.
I think it would raise red flags. Unless you have been scrupulous with your accounts up to now, I don't think it's worth the risk.

False teeth don't prevent kissing - that's personal preference.

You can add it to your return and try it, but I wouldn't risk drawing attention to myself and possibly an investigation over something that's got as much chance of being accepted as I have of playing centre back for England tomorrow night.

I laughed out loud at your analogy  ;D ;D

I claim for gym fees and kit and they accepted it! Tried to claim for breast implants and didn't x

Who accepted it?Have you been subject to a full HMRC investigation?
no! I've always kept on their good side, I just put expenses in and the accountant deals with the details, there is no harm in asking and it doesn't always mean you'll be investigated.

This doesn't mean HMRC have accepted them, it means that your accountant believes to the best of his knowledge that in the event that HMRC ever wanted to see a break down of your expenses, that the ones you've submitted would be acceptable.
Well in 10 years I've never had a problem and hopefully I never get investigated, glad you understand HMRC Mirror, I'll pm you when I need tax advice x

Most corporate companies pay for employee Gym fee's. Its standard. My company obviously pays for mine too.

I changed accountants and he didn't query my gym expense, my last accountant rejected the boob job but I was pushing my luck maybe! I'll need to speak to him! X

I'm skyping with the accountant this evening so I'm hoping he will tell me he didn't put my gym expenses in! I've googled it and hmrc are pretty adamant you can't claim for this, x

But you/we aren't a corporate company, we are sole traders/individuals. The rules are different.
