Government help to build a website
« on: September 16, 2010, 01:59:08 AM »
OK, I don't know if this was a REALLY stupid thing to do.....
I was looking at creating my own website, no experience and much optimism.  8)  I came across this site... Getting British Business Online http://www.gbbo.co.uk/

Basically you get a free website for 2 years, then just pay a few pounds to renew the domain name for another 2 years.  It's with BT and Google plus loads of enterprise support people.  They have a target of helping create 100,000 websites by the end of the year and are encouraging small/miceo businesses.

Well, I thought, I'm an entrepreneur, what we are doing is legal, I pay taxes so why not?
A day after creating a minimalist website www.shysmile.co.uk I received a phone call from a nice young  sounding girl at a GBBO call centre.

- Hello, this is Spritely Young Government Backed Worker, I understand you have just created a new website with GBBO.
- Erm, yes
- And your business is..... an escort
- Yes
- Well, I was just calling to see if I could help you improve your website in anyway.
- I'm a bit worried about the address for the domain name
- I'm sure you could use your local pub

She then went through my (very minimal) website at the time, page by page suggesting improvements!  She has told me to call anytime for help!

How wonderful.   Or not?  Have I been stupid?
x
ps.  Any comments on the site ie. any typos or anything I might have missed would be appreciated.  I'm taking more photos at the weekend, which will hopefully be a bit better than the ones on there.

That was brave but shows initiative. Only had a quick look but your rates are all muddled up on the page - they need aligning properly.

Well done you for taking the oppertunity! Sounds like all went well- I must say I am very tempted to follow in your footsteps having exhausted my options on Moonfruit, and other free sites which allow adult content.

Judging by the 'entry' page for your website, they are aware it is adult content and have provided for this, so all seems good! I'm sure it will be really useful to hear of your experiences with it. I'm sure the lady would have mentioned on the phone if there was a problem.

I've got sunshine, on a cloudy day. When it's cold outside I've got the month of May.

That is brilliant!

I do hope you are allowed to continue, after all, as you say, you are a legal, tax paying business!

And I'm going to have a look at http://www.gbbo.co.uk/ as a possibility for when I set up my other (non escorting) business, so thank you for the link  :)

Yes, they didn't have an escort or adult business category.  I think I registered it as Massage.

I also managed to change my registered address on-line through their site.  It was instantaneous.  I had put my home address, then I remembered when Simone was having problems with a stalker, someone mentioned (might have been Ian) that people can find out your address from the "Whois" search.  So I've put a c/o address (which is not my local pub!).

I did that in the Google Manage Site function, Site Settings, then General.  It has a tick box for adult content.

Thanks for that.  They look fine in my browser.  I'll put them in a table instead of tabbing... hopefully that will sort it out!
