It's just one of those things - a bank is not obliged to offer you an account and they're entitled to set their own rules about who can have what (in addition to all the regulations they have to abide by). If you are using an account for business purposes (whether wholly or mainly) then the bank can insist you need to use a business account (because it has different charges, which is how they make money). If they know or suspect you are using a personal account for business purposes, they may close it down. Plus, all financial services providers use fairly sophisticated monitoring software for anti-fraud and anti-money laundering and, as you might imagine, some of the main things it looks for are cash transactions and lots of irregular electronic transfers (as opposed to regular money in then regular direct debits out, which is how a 'normal' personal account usually looks).
It's therefore a bit of a gamble really - even if your account gets flagged they may not report / pursue it - but it's worth bearing in mind because the last thing you want is your account being closed and ending up without one.

HSBC were not ok with me, they were very rude, wouldn't just give me a basic account, they constantly tried to upsell, badgered me for the source of the money (I wanted a simple account for client deposits) and were so cold I walked out.

Went to a different bank, former building society who were very happy to give me their basic savings style account. I did tell the advisor where the cash was coming from, they didn't bat an eyelid and certainly didn't even suggest a business account

My OH has a business account with HSBC and has had some very bad experiences with them, he hasn't moved because to do so would cause just as much hassle however as a result neither of us would recommend them for anyone.

I have been with Lloyds for 11 years, no problem whatsoever. Also never asked me to open a business account despite regular deposits.
I briefly had a current account with nat west, what an absolute nightmare they were. Woman who set up the account for me was rude and intrusive, then after I got fed up with them, they charged me ?25 to close down the scummy account :o

Also had no problems at all with Lloyds in many (20+) years, including those where I only had one account for both work and personal stuff.

Switched to Halifax for personal account and have had work account with Santander for years and had no problems with either; have just switched to NatWest for personal account. I'll be switching again to First Direct shortly for personal, but my Santander account will be staying exactly where it is :).

I have had no probs with Natwest and been with them for years, having a few accounts with them. I think with banks it is much like any other place which should have excellent customer services.  Only once a very long time ago I had to have a word with one of the staff because of her off hand manner, all other staff have been fine but it is hit and miss whichever bank or place you deal with.  I never put up and shut up with anything I would not do or say myself whether it is bank or not.

Yep I've had good experiences with Halifax and Santander, I'm no longer with Lloyds due to self-imposed reasons which have nothing to do with their service (all to do with my shame at once upon a short-time having very bad debt problems which are all now resolved).

I've banked with Lloyds for about 40 years and I know they don't give me the juciest interest rates, but I stay there because they have consistently given me the best customer service.

Case in point -I woke up one morning to realise I'd been burgled during the night. This was over a bank holiday weekend. I rang my card providers to cancel any charges.
Barclaycard: Oh, sorry to hear that, I'll cancel the card and send you a new one.
Santander: Ok. I've cancelled your card. Happy Easter. Is there anything else I can help you with?
Lloyds: Oh no, are you okay? Did you hear them come in? That must have been so scary, I'm glad you're okay! As it's bank holiday our branches arent open until Tuesday, but just go into your local branch then with this code and they'll be able to give you cash as an interim measure before your new card arrives. I see you have home insurance with us, shall I pass you through to a colleague on that team to see how they can help?

And me, I am not a mess, I am a wilderness, yes
