Did anyone else notice this on Emmerdale this evening?
« on: 21 November 2017, 12:22:38 am »
Well the writers of Emmerdale don't live in the real world me thinks?
The line went roughly along the lines of:-

"We have had a prostitute in the place - we need to disinfect the whole house"

Well I need to put on my shopping list tomorrow " and a bottle of Dettol" just to be sure...

I don't watch soaps, mainly because they are so unrealistic. I do bathe in Dettol daily though!

Yes I saw that too.  This is not about whether anyone watches soaps, it is more about the writers and what they think is acceptable . I found the line shocking too. Quite unneccessary.

Yep i saw it and just laughed to myself. Outsiders can think of STD's and druggies and street walking when they think of prostitute. I was not offended just laughed at the comment.

REminds me of the episode in friends, where host gets a hooker instead of a stripper, and they make references to burn the bed and Monica wants to clean wherever the dirty hooker sat! Still makes me laugh tbh doesn?t bother me!

I don't watch emmerdale but I notice stuff like this all the time, personally it does bother me. It's just constantly reinforcing our dehumanisation for our job, it's so ingrained people don't even question it and these mindsets trickle over into real life - the treatment of us and the public opinion of us - while you can do the whole "ignore what people say" thing, the public opinion influences laws and regulations. So it might seem like a silly throw away comment but personally I think it matters.

Yeah thats how I feel about it too. Just one of those things. Most jobs have a negative stereotype so this is no different. This kind of thing is best to laugh at. Soaps are real life anymore anyway!  ;D

I totally get what you?re saying, I think the problem is a lot of women don?t want to tell people what they do for a living, so unfortunately ?normal nice women? are never really thought of as being the most common working girl.
No one would ever guess that I do this and would be totally shocked, even though there?s is a part of me that would love to stand up proud and show the world that ?people like me? do this job and I?m not any of the stereotypes that get thrown around.
But of course, I keep it to myself, when jokes are thrown about I laugh along. If anything very negative is ever mentioned in front of me though, I do try to make certain arguments in sp?s favour if that makes sense.

Totally get what your saying! I feel like that too. its like I am an open minded person and nothing offends me. I am usually very open and find it easy to talk about most things but when it comes to my 'work' I prefer to give it private. Can honestly say if certain friends of mine found out I wouldnt be bothered but dont know about my close friends and family. Especially my mum. My mum worries too much and Im sure most mothers dont like the idea of their daughter having sex with pretty much random people and working in such a 'high risk' job, so just easier to keep it private :)

I did see it, in all fairness the character who said is is a snotty nose cow but yes there does often seem to be a lack of understanding / empathy and all round general respect for a woman who chooses this as her business because that's what it is, my business.

My friends often make jokes about someone on social media's 'hooker' outfit and it's not a compliment. Best I keep my 'business activities' to myself!
