BuzzFeed News story about police treatment of sex workers
« on: 07 December 2017, 03:56:53 pm »
Hi, my name is Hannah and I'm a reporter with BuzzFeed News.

I'm working on a piece about police treatment of sex workers. I won't go into too much detail here, as I don't want to give my story away, but I'm really interested in speaking to any sex workers who have reported a crime to police and felt that they have not had a satisfactory outcome.

I understand that some people may not be comfortable speaking to a journalist, but I want to assure you that I can guarantee complete anonymity to anyone who does not wish for their identity to be revealed.

I have already spoken to the ECP and NUM about this story, but I am really keen to hear from sex workers themselves also.

I would be more than happy to go into more details about my research etc., and can be contacted on email: hannah.al-othman@buzzfeed.com. My Twitter DMs are also open, and I can be found at @HannahAlothman.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, I've included some examples of my work below too.

Best wishes,
Hannah.

Here is some stuff I have written in the past in this area:

You cannot generalise "police" as a whole or a single entity.  They are all different in different areas, some are better educated and aware of the type of crime experienced by sex workers, others, utter rubbish.

Hi! This is exactly what my piece is about - how a lot of forces are really, bad how that doesn't have to be the case, as others are doing things a lot better. Trying to gather experiences of sex workers from different areas of the country to illustrate this.

Why not write  something new for a change. No offence meant but it's sooo tiresome the typical sex worker stereotype.
I'd be interested to read an article about how mundane a job it is, I think I'm a typical prostitute and in 7years of working full time I have never even been verbally abused

I was thinking about this recently! I'm dying to see a film or programme about someone who happens to be a sex worker but also does things like study, get a dog, look after a sick relative etc... with the focus on everything that isn't the sex work. My dog is sweet, my course is interesting and my job is so boring! I have plenty of group chats with more drama than my work life.

Doesn't Frankie at ECP also write news articles on the police treatment of sex workers?

Some police are really great; in fact up north there is the Merseyside Model where violence against sex workers is considered a hate crime and treated accordingly. In East Sussex police do outreach work to brothels to make sure that all the sex workers are in control of their own movement, money and passports - and don't uphold the law to close the brothels down.

Maybe contact the police as well?

Maybe concentrate on how we would be perfectly safe but the fact we are forced to work alone for fear being classed as a brothel if you are sharing a flat with a friend. Apparently in the North west people of being 'shutting down' flats where 2 independent girls are working together..
